Social Service “Identify Early, Treat Faster” at Payangan Public Health Center Gianyar: A Manifestation of Community Service by the Surgery Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University

In celebration of the 35th Anniversary of the Surgery Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, the Department of Surgery organized a social service activity titled “Identify Early, Treat Faster” at the Payangan Public Health Center (Puskesmas Payangan), Gianyar, on Saturday, August 22, 2026.

This activity is part of the 35th-anniversary series of the Surgery Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, and serves as a tangible implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, specifically in community service. Through this initiative, the Department of Surgery aims to provide health education, early detection, and direct medical services to the public.

The event commenced with opening remarks by Dr. dr. Made Agus Dwianthara Sueta, Sp.B, Subsp.BD(K). This was followed by the presentation of a plaque of appreciation and cooperation to the Head of Payangan Public Health Center, dr. Ni Putu Eka Ngantini, handed over by Prof. Dr. dr. Putu Anda Tusta Adiputra, Sp.B, Subsp.Onk(K).

Health Education to Enhance Public Awareness

A core component of the event was a series of health education sessions covering critical surgical issues that the public needs to recognize early.

A lecture on “Hematochezia / Rectal Bleeding” was delivered by Dr. dr. Made Agus Dwianthara Sueta, Sp.B, Subsp.BD(K). This session aimed to improve public understanding of bloody stool symptoms, emphasizing the importance of recognizing signs that require further medical evaluation.

Furthermore, dr. Ida Bagus Budiarta, Sp.B, Subsp.BVE(K) conducted an educational session on Chronic Limb-Threatening Ischemia (CLTI). Attendees gained insight into impaired blood flow in the legs, warning signs to watch for, and the critical need for early detection and intervention to prevent severe complications.

Meanwhile, an educational session on breast cancer was presented by dr. I Putu Ari Gunawan, Sp.B, Subsp.Onk(K). The presentation underscored the importance of recognizing changes in the breast and undergoing timely screenings as part of early detection efforts.

Health Screening and Services

In addition to health education, the social service event featured health screenings using diagnostic procedures. These examinations included anoscopy, ultrasonography (USG) for CLTI evaluation, and breast USG (USG mammae).

These screenings were a pivotal element of the "Identify Early, Treat Faster" concept, ensuring that participants received not only medical information but also direct diagnostic examinations.

The activity also provided minor surgical procedures, including nail extractions, clavus excisions, circumcisions, and abscess incision and drainage. These procedures were performed based on clinical indications following patient evaluations.

A Commitment to Community Service

Throughout the 35-year journey of the Surgery Study Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, contributing to the improvement of public health status has remained an integral component of medical education, healthcare service, and research.

This social service event at Payangan Public Health Center stands as a concrete representation of that commitment. The initiative not only delivered medical care but also fostered public awareness regarding the importance of recognizing early symptoms, seeking timely evaluations, and receiving prompt treatment.

Through this event, the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University hopes to further strengthen collaborations with healthcare facilities and the community, expanding the institution's sustainable contributions to public health.
