Basic Surgical Skills Workshop May 2026

The Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, in collaboration with Prof. Dr. I.G.N.G. Ngoerah General Hospital, organized the Basic Surgical Skills Workshop on Saturday, May 30, 2026. Held at the Surgical Meeting Room, 2nd Floor, Prof. Dr. I.G.N.G. Ngoerah General Hospital, the workshop was attended by physicians and participants seeking to enhance their fundamental surgical competencies through a combination of theoretical instruction and hands-on practical training.

The event commenced with an opening address delivered by the Head of the Department of Surgery, Prof. Dr. dr. Putu Anda Tusta Adiputra, Sp.B, Subsp.Onk(K). Following the singing of the Indonesian national anthem, Indonesia Raya, and a joint prayer session, participants engaged in a series of systematically structured lectures and practical sessions designed to introduce the fundamental principles of safe and effective surgical practice.

The workshop featured faculty members and surgical specialists from various subspecialties who provided skill-based instruction. The first session focused on aseptic and antiseptic procedures, presented by Dr. dr. Gede Eka Rusdi Antara, Sp.B, Subsp.BD(K), MARS, M.H, emphasizing the critical importance of infection prevention in all surgical procedures. In the subsequent session, participants were introduced to minor surgical instruments, wound suturing techniques, and various surgical knot-tying methods under the guidance of Dr. dr. Agus Roy Rusly Hariantana Hamid, Sp.B.P.R.E., Subsp.T(K). These skills constitute an essential foundation for healthcare professionals involved in wound management and basic surgical procedures.

Following a coffee break and sponsor presentation, the program continued with lectures and practical training on incision, drainage, and debridement, led by dr. Ida Bagus Budiarta, Sp.B, Subsp.BVE(K). Participants gained valuable insights into the principles of soft tissue infection management and techniques for the removal of devitalized tissue. The next session covered extirpation techniques for benign tumors, presented by dr. Ni Gusti Ayu Agung Manik Yuniawaty Wetan, Sp.B, Subsp.Onk(K). This session provided participants with an understanding of the principles of benign lesion excision and patient safety considerations in minor surgical procedures.

The workshop then proceeded with a session on circumcision, delivered by dr. Kadek Deddy Ariyanta, Sp.B, Sp.BA, Subsp.D.A(K). Participants received comprehensive instruction regarding indications, preoperative preparation, and procedural steps in accordance with established surgical standards. As the concluding session, participants attended a practical workshop on extremity splinting techniques, facilitated by dr. I Komang Weka, Sp.B. This session aimed to enhance participants’ ability to perform initial immobilization in cases of extremity trauma prior to definitive treatment.

In addition to the comprehensive lectures and practical sessions, participants were divided into small groups to facilitate interactive learning and close supervision throughout the workshop. This approach provided each participant with optimal opportunities to practice and refine the skills being taught. Through the implementation of the Basic Surgical Skills Workshop, the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, hopes to strengthen participants’ competencies in mastering the fundamental principles of safe, effective, and standardized surgical practice. This activity also reflects the Department’s ongoing commitment to advancing surgical education and clinical skills development in the field of surgery.
